Album Review: MDNA - Madonna

After a four-year break from the music business, the queen of pop has once again reinvented herself with her brand new album MDNA.

Even though her previous album Hard Candy was a worldwide hit, it had a lukewarm reception among her hardcore fans who were not feeling the hip hop sound and production of the record.

With MDNA, Madonna brings back her signature style combining elements of her career that have made her the star she is today.

Let´s analize the album with a track by track overview:

Girl Gone Wild - The opening track produced by Benny Benassi is a club banger and showcases Madonna dance roots in all her glory. Once you listen to the album in full it makes perfect sense why this one had to be the second single. 8.5/10

Gang Bang - One of the strongest and most interesting songs on the album. The lyrics are violent and the atmosphere is strange and mysterious. Madonna wants to seek revenge on a lover and "shoot him in the head". MDNA could have used more of this (risky) direction. 9.5/10

I´m Addicted - Techno dance beats fill this over-produced song. It definitely makes you dance but it is hardly memorable. 4/10

Turn Up The Radio - The perfect summer anthem. Madonna sings about how pumping up the volume on the radio makes her feel. Could be single material, and it definitely puts a smile on your face. 7/10

Give Me All Your Luvin - The first single of the record doesn´t exactly represents what the rest of the music contained in this collection of songs sound like. It was perfect for the Superbowl and for a live performance but it won´t be relevant ten years from now. 5/10

Some Girls - A song that would perfectly suit Britney Spears or Kesha but the extremely over-produced beats and vocals makes Madonna almost unrecognizable which isn´t exactly a good sign. 4/10

Superstar - This positive and romantic song sounds like a modernized version of True Blue. She sings about her lover and compares him with celebrities she deeply admires. Daughter Lourdes sings background vocals as well. 6/10

I Don´t Give A - A dance-rap song with 80´s beats and Nicky Minaj. Perhaps one of her most personal tracks on MDNA, she sings about her daily routine and her failed marriage as well, but making no apoligies for who she is and what she does. The orchestal ending section will blow your speakers up. 9/10

I´m A Sinner - William Orbit´s updated signature beats and guitar make an appearance. A nice bouncy pop song complete with religious references where she sings “I’m a sinner, and I like it that way”.  6/10

Masterpiece - The Golden Globe winning song from her film "W.E." is the perfect soothing ballad we all know and love from Madonna. 9/10

Love Spent - Clearly aimed at her ex-husband, the mid-tempo track uses the craving for money as a metaphor to a failed relationship. This song demonstrates why the combination Madonna + William Orbit works so well as she addresses the end of love but also the need to be hold in that person´s arms once more. Should definitely be a single. 9.5/10

Falling Free - This is hands down the most authentic song on the record. Her voice sounds vulnerable and the production is exquisite complete with strings and beautiful lyrics. It makes you wonder why she does not make this type of songs more often. 9.5/10

First Look: "The Carries Diaries"

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new (and younger) Carrie Bradshaw!

Yes, the CW is filming the pilot to the prequel series The Carries Diaries based on the books that tell the story of the iconic character when she was coming of age during the 80´s.

Anna Sophia Robb (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) has been cast to play the title role.

Writer/executive producer Amy B. Harris explains why the actress is perfect to play the young Carrie:

“Her grace, intelligence, sense of fun and her empathetic nature make her the perfect girl. The fact that she loves a gorgeous pair of heels doesn’t hurt either.”

Rihanna Comments on Chris Brown Collaboration

Rihanna spoke to Ryan Seacrest about her recent collaboration on two songs with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

As you already know, Brown brutally attacked Rihanna on 2009 and rumors keep swirling around that the couple might be seeing each other again.

Here´s what Rihanna had to say about it:

“The first song that came about was ‘Birthday Cake.’ I mean we ended up recording them at the same time and executing them together, but I reached out to him about doing ‘Birthday Cake’ because that’s the only person that really–it made sense to do the record. Just as a musician despite everything else that was going to be the person. You know I thought about rappers, and I’ve done that so many times, and the hottest R&B artist out right now is Chris Brown.

So I wanted him on the track, and then in turn he was like ‘Why don’t you do the remix to my track?’ and it was a trade off. We did two records. One for my fans. One for his fans, and that way our fans can come together. There shouldn’t be a divide. You know? It’s music, and it’s innocent.”

You can listen to that part of the interview by clicking below!

John Mayer Cancels Tour To Battle Throat Condition

John Mayer has revealed that the throat condition that made him delay his new album and tour six months ago has persisted and, as a result, he has no choice but to cancel his tour plans.

Mayer announced the news to his fans through his Tumblr blog:

"I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing. Something didn't feel/sound right (during a rehearsal on Tuesday). I went in for a visit on Wednesday and a scope of my vocal cords revealed that the granuloma has grown back where it had mostly healed. This is bad news."

Mayer continued to explain that the treatment will require "another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence".

 He continued:

"I'm pretty emotionally burnt out at the moment, but please know how hard I tried to resolve this and how disappointed I am that I can't perform this record yet," Mayer continues in the blog post. "I'm completely bummed, especially for all of you who started making plans to see a show. Nothing feels worse than having to break the stage down before the performance, and I mean nothing.

I love this band you were going to hear, I love the guys and girls I work with, and the only thing that stops me from devolving into a puddle of tears is knowing that it's a long life, and the greatest gift in the world is being able to create music no matter what the circumstances. So these are the new circumstances, and I'll find a way to make it mean something. That's all you can ever do."

However Columbia Records has confirmed that Mayer´s fifth studio album Born and Raised is still planned for a May 22 release.

We  are sorry to learn about Mayer´s throat condition and wish him a speedy recovery.

Are you looking forward to his new album?
